Breast Cancer Awareness + Prevention

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Meritain Health has shared some information with Samet that we will sporadically share on this page throughout the month of October.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’d like to emphasize the importance of screening and prevention. Finding breast cancer early allows for more treatment options and greatly increases the chance of survival for women and men. In addition, it’s important to implement healthy lifestyle changes to also help reduce your risk and improve your overall health. Here are some to consider:

  • Avoid using tobacco.
  • Eat a healthy diet and maintain a healthy weight.
  • Limit alcohol consumption.
  • Perform self-breast examinations.
  • Schedule a mammogram as recommended.

    Did you know?

Did you know that today in the United States, 1 in every 8 women has a chance of developing breast cancer over her lifetime and a 1 in 39 chance of dying from breast cancer, and U.S. men make up 1 of every 100 breast cancer diagnoses in the country.

Decrease your chances by following the helpful advice on the attached Be Healthy and Stay Well flyer.

    Early Detection

Preventive screenings and early detection help save lives! Regular checkups, screenings and self-examinations can help detect cancer in its early stages. The American Cancer Society recommends yearly mammograms for women starting at age 40. It’s also important to discuss your family medical history with your doctor to determine if any tests are needed more often. Check out the attached flyer from Meritain Health for more information on awareness and prevention.
